Oh I assume people know when I'm joking, which turns out to be a bad idea when it's just type, Yahoo needs to invest in some smilies.
Prog just isn't my music, I find some of the shorter songs bearable and occasionally even enjoy them in a relaxing way, but too often I get bored before it's over.
But from an objective point of view, I'd assume, Genesis, ELO, Yes, Led Zeppelin, and King Crimson are some of the bigger ones to make my answer relate to the question in some way.

I agree with Fonzie but id put vander graf as my fave as they were so extreme and out there in another universe. I also would include Barclay James Harvest .
The princes were Led Zeppelin.
It is hard to relate to now, but the only way to hear the band was to buy the album, so you ran out and bought it. The only way to see the band was to go the concerts.
At the time they had very little air play in the UK because they didn't release singles.
There also wasn't the radio stations to listen too. Radio One and Radio Luxembourg played the top 40 singles.
The only music shows were TOTP and the Old Grey Whistle Test.
By 1971 they were a complete phenomenon, the fact that they slightly out of reach only increased the mystic and aura of the experience.
They opened the way for stadium rock. They mixed folk, rock, blues and world music in a way that still sounds contemporary today.
There were of course other contenders, but Led Zeppelin made the mould and still hold the copy right.
