Hank Sr & Jr are the first names that come to mind. Also, Waylong & Shooter Jennings. There's Jerry Jeff & D'jango Walker, but I doubt that's it.

Ernest Tubb and his son Justin Tubb. Sadly both are now deceased. Both Ernest and Justin were Grand Ole Opry members back in the day when it really meant something and both were great songwriters. There is a DVD/VHS out that Justin did in tribute to his Dad which I have in my collection in VHS format. The title of it is "Thanks, Troubador,Thanks"

Hank Snow and his son, Jimmie Rodgers Snow were another. But I think Jimmie only had a very short singing career and became a minister. A very famous father and daughter were George Morgan and his daughter Lorrie.
My mom would be close to your dad's age and she listened to hank Williams Sr and Jr but she loved Waylon Jennings. My guess would be that he is thinking of Hank Williams Jr only because I think Shooter is relatively new on the scene whereas Hank Jr was well known by the md 70's
