What is the meaning of hip-hop?!

Question: Hip hop (also spelled hip-hop or hiphop) is both a music genre and a cultural movement developed in New York City starting in the 1970s, predominantly by African Americans and Latinos.[1] Since first emerging in the Bronx, hip hop music has grown into an entire lifestyle, commonly referred to as hip hop culture, which has today spread around the world and is practised by many people regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion. Hip hop as a cultural movement encompasses a wide array of human activities, so called elements, including but not limited to hip hop music, breakdance, graffiti, DJing and MCing.

Just like what Thomas said above. Also, today's so called hip hop music isn't what hip hop is about.

hmm generally speaking its rhyming, hip-hop though is more based on the lyricist side..putting together the illest words, be it for punchlines or for greater consciousness, this is usually not on radio, becuase they dont talk about platinum chains, rims, or catchy hooks....men like rakim, krs-one, nas, and new guys like jae millz, talib kweli, mos def, commom, phaoroh monche, or little brother, people that have a message or can hold a theme for a whole song...

Hip hop actually coming from the word itself is a rhythmic kind of sound, where it originally came from the Black American and some of HIspanics community......this was vividly popular in the early 70's and the upbeat rhythmic music was just revived again and more modification this time!!!
