Country Music Fans-- Can you name this person?!

Question: He wrote a song that was recorded by Merle Haggard and that song was played via video feed at the memorial service for the late, great Tammy Wynette. He was a regular figure in Austin,Texas and he had a fondness for duct tape and would put it on his clothes and boots to make fun of the Urban Cowboy craze that was going around at that time. He was fatally shot trying to defend his elderly neighbor from an assault. He would sleep under pool tables in bars or on the couch of a friend. He was a funny person at times but could also get very moody at other times. There is more to his story and it is quite an interesting one to say the least.

See if you know without doing a search. The answer might even be hard to find using a search.

Well, the Merle Haggard song was "If I Could Only Fly", written by Blaze Foley. I knew the song from the funeral, but I admit I had to check Merle's album to remind me who wrote it.

Sounds like a wonderful, colorful character I should read up on.

George Jones?

ok i think i know this one..is it Blaze Foley?
i think this is right cause i kinda know the story about the TAMMY WYNETTE FUNERAL! I LOVE TAMMY AND HAVE READ EVERTHING ABOUT HER!

the song was no time to cry or if i could only fly?

The man is Blaze Foley, and the song is "if Only I could Fly"

I dunno. But all of this reminded me of Stringbean. What's the story behind Stringbean's murder, Tommy?

Thx 4 the info. I hope whoever those guys were that did that are either dead or suffering every second of their pathetic little lives. That was awful what they did.

On Merle's CD, If I Could Only Fly, what's everyones' favorite song on it? I really like I'm Still Your Daddy, but I also like to sing Think About A Lullaby to my grandbaby. They're all as good as it gets. I saw Merle w/ Marty Stuart 2-3 years ago at an Electric Barnyard show in Brooksville, KY and it was really good. I tried to get Merle's autograph by nooooo :( I just wanted him to autograph his autobiography for me (the book). It may have had something to do with all of us Indians being around. We're not into scalping these days, not that we ever started it, but I digress. How can I go about his autograph in the book without anyone thinking I'm a stalker or something? Most of my CDs & books are autographed. Marty autographed all of the CDs I bought from him. BTW, Marty is just another overlooked musician who doesn't get enough credit.

hey, didn't merle write if only i could fly?
