Question: Of these two instruments (Fiddle & Steel guitar) which one do you feel is a must have for the great classic country sound? Why do you think so?

I do know it is nice to have both but want to know which one of the two you feel is a must have.

i hear ya tommy fan..you can't live with them(women) and you can't play them on stage!!!!

i'm choosing the almighty STEEL!

The fiddle is versatile. It can be used in virtually in any type of song (it prefers country though). Usually, though in other types of music, it has more of classical sound (call it a violin then?) There is something about the steel guitar that sounds especially mournful. For a sad country song, it is indispensable.

Keep in mind, I am only a listener, not a player, so I don't really know what both instruments are capable of.

If you are gonna MAKE me pick one, then I'd have to say it's the fiddle. Only because it's been around for a lot longer and was the basis for C&W in the first place. But dang, I love that shiny steel guitar, don't you?

Been there with a feller er two & know what cha mean. I have 2 old "gittars" that were given to me, one from each parent. I'm blessed with an early 30s Gibson & an early 60s Martin that I'm in love with. I don't play all that good & I holler when I sang, but it entertains my daughters' boyfriends & keeps the wolves from the door anyhow. LOL Hel, I still sound better than a bunch that I hear on TV, even though that's not saying much. I used to run down to Nashtown so I could run down to the Alley & listen to some good old-fashioned tunes once in a while. I ought to make a run down there again sometime. Oh, I was gonna say, I think Patty Loveless is pretty danged good too!

YOU SEE?!?!, This is why I don't answer you and OKIE'S Questions !!!! YOU MAKE THE QUESTIONS SO HARD!!!!

I've thought about this, and I'll have to pick.... the fiddle!!!
(only on the fact, that you don't need amps or pick-ups to put on a show!!) (I had both, but the steel player had to resort to the dobro)

But the fiddler was there, and we could do basic bluegrass
all day long !!!!

(Hope I did'nt offend a Steel guitar Player)

In my day,

fiddle, though this is not an easy choice. in the right hands it can make you cry.

definately the fiddle

to somewhat quote Alabama If you're gonna play country music you gotta have a fiddle in the band

I'm going with the steel guitar. Nothing can make you feel the groove and the soul of a song like a steel guitar.

Steel Guitar. That sound is essential to TRUE country music. That and a good story.

Love the steel but I say the fiddle is the way. When played right, it can be a very spiritual experience.

Fool4, just answered your question about a band lineup (playing a little catch up while I listen to a Charlie Poole 3 cd set I just got in the mail today)

I won't choose, and you can't make me!

Alright dammit!

I'm going to go with steel. I love fiddle, but I'm pretending I'm at the Palomino in North Hollywood (before it closed!) and I'm eyeing a good looking woman, deciding if I'll ask her to dance. The band starts the next tune-if its western swing, Bakersfield, honky tonk, or '60s country rock-my question's already answered., and ALL of those NEED a steel!!!

Gotta go with a fiddle on this one. Man I love the steel. I want to learn to play one so bad it hurts but without that fiddle it just wouldn't be the same.

I like both but the fiddler does have that sound ?
