What did you think of Warren Zevon as a songwriter?!

I really miss him. His songs were poignant, funny, sad, hopeful, true.
Roland the headless thompson gunner is a hoot, as is werewolf. The envoy always spooked me a little. His genius goes way beyong words though. consider the structure of "desperadoes under the eaves"
"I was sitting in the hollywood hawaiian hotel, I was listening to the air conditioning hum. it went....." The key changes in the next section of the song go between majors and minors, alternately opening vistas of tomorrow and focusing on today's sadness.
"I take all my medicine as prescribed" fom"I'll sleep when i'm dead" is one of my favorite phrases. And "ain't that pretty at all" seems to sum up ennui pretty damn well: "I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all". My theme song for Hollywood.
I think Bruce Springsteen put it best when just after Warren passed he performed "My Ride's Here" and said that we have lost a great American songwriter, one of the best ever.
He's great....and very imaginative on some of them!
I didn't know he wrote Blue Bayou or Pitiful me, though.
Did he have something going with Linda Ronstadt?
Zevon didn't write "Blue Bayou"; Roy Orbison and Joe Melson did.
As for the songs Zevon did write, I think they're wonderful. The world lost a great musician when he died.
i think he ok not bad but not great. My favorite is werewolves of london because of its popularity
