What do you think of Cziffra's arrangements....?!
Question: of Sabre Dance and Flight of the Bumble Bee? I like his Sabre Dance, but his FBB is just to impress the audience. The piece is much more delicate and most of the time it's all obscured because there is too much technique involved. That's just my opinion. What do you think?

As a transcription, the Sabre Dance is a far more accomplished example, though the nasty sound Katsaris draws from the instrument doesn't exactly help the FBB one to endear itself easily. Cziffra's piano writing is fiercely intelligent and some of the effects are extremely well conceived. (It's interesting to note how both Cziffra and Horowitz, as transcribers, have found ways of inserting unobtrusive dissonance, in no way found in the originals, with which to create a particularly brittle piano sound which in itself isn't actually brittle at all, physically speaking. Very clever indeed.)
For me, a little of this kind of thing goes a very long way, though I've been guilty of giving similar things as encores on occasion, but there's no doubt that these 'party pieces' have helped push pianism forwards appreciably in the last 150 years so, as pianists, we probably ignore them at our peril. It's important to learn a few of them eventually, even if you actually never allow them to see the light of day on a stage, in the end: a veritable 'secret guilty pleasure'... :-)

blown away by the technique on both but didn't really enjoy either one (enjoyed Sabre Dance much more) I find seeing and hearing these fabulous technical accomplishments amazing but they usually make me want to hear the piece done musically
