Ok music experts. What bands do you consider the first "Alternative Rock&qu!

Question: Faith No More
R.E.M.

Answers: Faith No More
R.E.M.

The Pixies
The Smiths

The Cure. Maybe REM

R.E.M., The Cure, Joy Division (although they were around before the term was used), Echo and The Bunnymen, Pixies, Violent Femmes and loads of other bands. Then came the 90s, with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Velvet Underground is sometimes considered alternative rock. They released their first album in 1967.

I say it's U2 for the very first alternative rock band. Afterwards, bands like the Smiths, The Cure and R.E.M.

Seeing as how the word "alternative" refers to anything that doesn't fit into the category of mainstream, it could refer to anything...

The first group to be hugely confronting as far as lyrics and swearing are concerned were the Sex Pistols. With just one album they attacked Queen Elizabeth and the "facist regime", sung about abortion, confronted communism, etc...
They dressed differently, acted differently and sang differently. They didn't change the lyrics of their songs in order to get them played on "mainstream" radio, because the "mainstream" crowd were the ones that they hated.

i remember someone playing something "new" to me in the late 60's - Santana butit all depends on what time period your talking about. The Beatles and Dylan became alternatives to elvis and motown, who took over from the croonies, who took over from big bands etc etc
