Thats a good question...but bootlegging effects all artists...so I doubt that the bootleggers would be a good excuse...Labels are smart and getting their artist signed to make that Ringtone money...sites like iTunes also make good money for artist with that hit single...
As far as my favorite artist disappearing for good...I dont know...They are usually jumping from label to label anyways, so only time will tell with that.
I think the chances are pretty low. Bootlegging is a major problem, but it's not a problem so big that it could ruin an artists career. Somebody out there is buying the album.
