Question: I know I should be able to find this out myself but I can't. I heard the song for the first time the other day and it immediately felt so familiar and like a 'homecoming' I wondered if I'd heard it before. Or maybe it's based on something else. Any ideas?

Yes it was, it was used in the movie "A Clockwork Orange".
The main theme is an electronic transcription of Henry Purcell's Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary[4], composed in 1695 for the procession of Queen Mary's cortège through the streets of London enroute to Westminster Abbey.
