Answers: I have a few to throw in:

The Fifth Element

Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Queen Of The Damned (sh!t film - good songs though)
Halloween (the original John Carpenter one)
And ANYTHING that John Williams has done ( Star Wars, E.T., Superman, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park etc...)

The Crow...
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas...
A Clockwork orange...
Apocalypse now...
Basil Poledouris, (Conan the barbarian, Cecil B. Demented.)
and Danny Elfman soundtracks, (Beetlejuice, and every movie not scored by Poledouris or John Williams...) are usually pretty darned good.

No doubt, best movie soundtrack, so close to my heart is from "Once Upon A Time In America"

Mortal Kombat:)
The Departed
Alpha dog wasn't bad

Almost Famous
Forest Gump
Pink Floyd The Wall (duh)
A Beautiful Mind (Howard Shore is an amazing composer)
The Hours (Philip Glass is also an amazing composer)
Queen of the Damned has a great instrumental soundtrack too (very haunting) but I do agree the movie was horrible, completely ruined the book for me.

edit:
geminia28: Wow, great examples. I completely forgot about Dazed and Confused (how did I?), Garden State, Across the Univerese and I Am Sam, and I'm a big Beatles fan

Almost forgot: This Is Spinal Tap!

High School Musical (hahaha)

I love movie soundtracks ... I buy them more than I buy "regular" CD's ...

some of my favorites are
Meet the Robinsons
Brokeback Mountain
Donnie Darko
Say Anything ...
Titanic (minus Celine Dion's song ;))
She's Having A Baby

and I agree with you about John Williams ... but add Danny Elfman's work too ... amazing !

And of course most of the Disney soundtracks !

Ditry Dancing
Pretty Woman
La Bamba
Grease
Top Gun

I liked
The Red Violin
&
Requiem for a Dream
&
Man on Fire

almost famous: is sweet as hell and there are great messages in the movie,innocent times,about music fun and partying :}

maybe not the BEST ever but i have and like the soundtrack from lost highway...i like the variety on it...it has smashing pumpkins..david bowie...marilyn manson...rammstein (sp)....lou reed....and some others i cant think of right now...... it was produced by trent reznor...

and even though a tad lame and dated i like purple rain..

Dazed and Confused or The Last Waltz would have to be the best in my opinion....Peace!

Natural Born Killers is the BEST!!! For classics though, I always loved Footloose and Top Gun. This list can not even begin without Grease and Saturday Night Fever.

Most are mentioned already but would like to put a shout out for a soundtrack that is everywhere on television at the moment. People think it comes from Return of the King but in fact it comes from this:

Requiem for A Dream - Clint Mansell

Other mentions would be

The Blues Brothers
Forrest Gump
Natural Born Killers

I've even seen Lux Aeterna from Requiem being played on Childrens TV which is weird considering the content that Requiem shows.

Garden State
Across the Universe
Once
Dazed and Confused
I am Sam

Wonder Boys
Forrest Gump

requiem for a dream
