The new taylor's with the expression system (ES preamp) have three different pickups placed at certain points inside the guitar. One of the three pickups has magnetic coil that works in almost the same way as an electric pickup but the other two pick up the vibrations of the body. This allows the new Taylor pickups to have a much more rich, full sound. The fishman preamps work in the same way all other acoustic preamps work although they are top of the line models (like Taylor would use anything less).
my mom has a small taylor and she swears by it.
