Nu Metal is the best described as the next generation of metal that incorporates a lot of elements of rap, hip-hop, and groove metal. It came to prominence during the mid 90's with bands like Korn, P.O.D., Papa Roach and the aforementioned Linkin Park. Also, it's much closer to grunge than hip-hop.

Its a type of metal that is also pop influenced. IE Korn, Disturbed, Mudvayne, Deftones, Static x.

What is Metal? Metal is stuff that spans Iron Butterfly's "Born to be Wild" in 1968 , thru to the NWOBHM Iron Maiden, Saxon, Leppard, Priest, Mot'or ead', It ain't AC/DC really...that's "Hard Rock", but sheep radio listeners don't know the diff. It's Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc. (i've obviously thrown in the "Thrash" genre...) . Simply , Metal stopped being Metal in the mid 90's. Anything after that is just an ongoing ambiguos amalgamation of a vortex of missunderstood labels.
