Whats the difference between Screamo, emo, metal, hardcore, indie, etc bands?!

Question: Can you just please tell me how I can listen, or look at a bands picture, (perferably just listen to) and automatically know "hey! thats a screamo band!"

Thanks :)

screamo is when the singing is almost all screaming/growling

Hardcore is a lot of guitar and some screaming

Indie is usually most calm and for the most part acoustic

and Im not really sure how to explain emo bands.
I'd say....

MCR - emo band

Silverstein - screamo band

Parkway Drive - hardcore band

As I Lay Dying - metal band

Bloc Party - indie band

Bad Religion - punk band

Cute Is What We Aim For - pop punk band

Thursday - alternative rock band
well this is how im able to tell.....

Screamo- Most of the song has screaming in it....

Emo- Is music with emotionally charged lyrics.....they tend to have alot of emotion....now these songs can have screaming in them but its a mix of screaming and singing...it has mostly singing though

Metal- Dark music with male vocals and a killer guitar solo...there are different types...heavy, black, death, thrash...

Hardcore- Vocals with guitar, bass, drums...all instruments....more instrument playing then singing though

Indie now that im not to sure of...

now to be able to look and tell all i can say is

emo and screamo bands keep the same look.....they have their bangs off to one side of their face covering their eyes......or half their face and they have short hair,....They wear black and eyeliner

metal, hardcore they wear the spikes, black, stuff like that

Yet again Im not sure about Indie

screamo/emo bands- Fall Out Boy, The Finalist, Thrice

Hardcore- Linkin Park, Bayside

Metal- Bullet for My Valentine

Indie- Panic at the disco{ as far as their concerned}

And MCR IS NOT EMO..THEY ARE A POP/PUNK BAND!

I hope this helped!
Emo- Fall Out Boy, and MCR is not a good example as they are more emo/metal.

Screamo- Underoath

Metal- Metallica

Hardcore- System of a Down, but make sure you don't base your decisions on their ballads.

Indie- not even a music genre. This is classification of whether or not a band has a mainstream record label, and using to classify bands is seriously retarded. You judge a band on how it sounds, not what label it's signed with.
Screamo -
"loud-to-soft" (sometimes chaotic) dynamics,
and guitars with fast-paced riffs and twinkly melodic breaks.
frantic/abrasive shouting or screaming,
angry/abstract/introspective lyrics,
exceptionally energetic live shows.

Emo -
Mainly emotional hardcore.
With emotional lyrics usually about issues like love.
The Emo Genre' is so widespead now
ever since MTV decided to make it the new fad,
and bands like Fall Out Boy are being put under this genre,
which is absolutely ridiculous.
Emo is hardly anything anymore,
you can refer to a chair as emo.

Metal -
Heavy guitar and drums,
characterized by highly amplified distortion
and fast guitar solos.
Thrash metal are bands like Metallica and Slayer
taking on faster beats.

Hardcore -
Hardcore metal (metalcore) - heavy metal and thrash.
Hardcore punk - faster and heavier punk
Hardcore techno - faster tempo, distorted beats.
So, Hardcore basically means the extremes of a genre.

Indie -
Independent Music
YES, its described to see whether a band is signed or not,
but it has developed into it's own genre.
If it's a little strange, and a little different
it would probably call under the indie label.
Because not many people like is hence why it's not played on the radio,
which is why it's 'independant'
There is mainly indie pop & indie rock.
Try bands like Modest Mouse,
i personally like the UK indie scene.

Pop Rock -
That music mostly played on the radio
to satisfy the whole teeny bopper population.
Those mainstream bands that go to number one on the charts.
Because such a wide range of people like their music.

As for telling what genre a band is by looking at their photo,
i don't think that's a wise idea.
It's pretty much generalizing, and just picking the stereotype.
Other than the obvious bands (Slipknot, Slayer)
it's not exactly the right way to go.
Alot of the bands and people in the music industry are posers anyway.
So i wouldn't judge their music on how they look.
okay
EMO- emotinal lyrics usally bout love and boy meets girl
ie. (sorry but they are) MCR

Screamo- close to emo but more anger and aggresion
ie underoath

Metal - loud fast melodic (basiclly thats it)
ie metalica pantera

Hardcore- a hybrid of punk and metal. full of double kicks breakdowns and the occasional scream
ie parkway drive, i killed the prom queen, madball

indie - slower pace rock,
ie the killers and such
