Is there ANY example of a musical artist going clean and sober, and their music !

Question: Because I certainly can't think of any.

Answers: Because I certainly can't think of any.
It's half and half.

You want to be drugged up when your writing the song, and then sober when you play it.

Nobody wants to pull a Keith Moon and pass out on stage, leaving the drum set to a 19 year old from the audience. On a second note, stay away from horse tranquilizers all together.
There are such things?!?!?
I can thing of several going the other way but.... wow.

*edit
The only examples I can think of(and not very good ones) is some artist getting sober and remaining the same musically (John Frusciante, Duff McKagan, Slash) but I can't think of any that got better....
hhmmm ... lol
you got me there

ohhh I didnt know that My Chemical Romance are now sober...
and I love their new stuff !
No way.

Drugs = Brilliance.

Example: Syd Barrett.
Social Distortion is the only band I can think of.
yes indeed, Aerosmith was drug free all of the 90+ and they had great song during that time. Dave Grohl(from the Foo Fighters), has been sober and keeps rockin' out the hits with the Foo Fighters! Just to name 2 of my favorites.
my chemical romance, definitely. vocals are much better now.
but yes, i certainly agree with you.
The Beatles. Personally, I think Abbey Road is their best. I'm pretty sure they had quit drugs by that time.
Blues harmonica masters Charlie Musselwhite & Rick Estrin of Little Charlie & the Nightcats
several people have said my chemical romance, but i think they got worse! i love bullets way more than the black parade, it just has so much more emotion and what not.

so, no, i can't think of an example.
I would say Down's Phil but the music is pretty much the same.
*Slash- w/th "velvet Revolver"-
&-Scott weiland-saw them live w/th Alice in Chains-Aug "07
amazing..-for slash being an ex heroine/cocaine addict, the former Guns n Roses axe man, with his new band, he was amazing-and solo'd his arce off..and Scott Weiland- re-habiliting for the umteenth time, from heroine/cocaine addiction as well, former Stone Temple Pilots singer, tastefully and revivingly collaborates to his fullest potential with Velvet Revolver.. put on a great stage performance, and his voice was amazing.. they also pulled of some astonishing, nostalgic "Guns n Roses" covers, "Stone Temple Pilots" Covers, and even did a truly Beautifully sweet cover of "Pink Floyd's- Wish You Were Here"!!

*Jerry Cantrell-"Alice in Chains"- they're still touring, he's cleaned up, and they sound just as bad a*s as before, even with their new singer, who is mulatto, and has an amazing voice, and could match Layne's once beautiful/sometimes painful harmonies...and Jerry Cantrell just Ripped it up!!

*Ozzy- in 2005 -on the ozzfest tour- The Original "Black Sabbath" line-up Headlined ozzfest, and ozzy as "shot", as he is from years of drug abuse, partying, touring, he was lively on stage,& you could actually understand him when he was singing, which rocked! + a couple of months before that, he was in a s*itty motorcycle accident, in which he was in a coma for eight days, and had metal plates implanted in his front shoulder blades, and still.. he f*ng rocked out like a motherF*cker!!!! Now that is pure perseverance, & will power! Especially for Ozzy Osbourne!

*Trent Reznor- for all of the depressing lyrics, music, inspired by his downward spiral of drug/alcohol abuse.. for a recoverer on the road to even more success, this rockstar, has done it again!!! i saw Nine Inch Nails in Orlando, FL. In Oct. 2005- and for recovering from all of that drug/alcohol abuse, and being as talented as he is genius, to carry on nine inch nails to take there music to new hights, throughout a decades time, and still have that Nine Inch Nails dark Industrial trademark.. they were f*ng Amazing...one of the most phenomenal shows i have ever encountered!! and they still make sweet music..
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails

Yesr Zero is the best thing he has done since The Downward Spiral
- first of all I guess most bands were more or less 'on best behavior' when in recording studio. so this purely an academic question. I mean regardless of lifestyle, don't think there's many examples of guys goin to cut a record [or on Stage for that matter] completely blitzed -- I mean like out-&-out bombed. when performing, lot of technology there, have to know what you're doing. get stoned in your leisure-time, so (hopefully) this doesn't show up anywhere else
- to "Cat Stevens" [does Cat know you're using his name?] -- excuse-me -- what stupidity. drugs = brain-damage. & Syd Barrett: no one could bring up better example -- regardless of other problems he might have had -- ended up a vegetable half the time, legendary how he had to be spoonfed in a hospital.
- there are some like Eric Clapton who remained pretty much the same --
but just to say: don't think a question of getting better or worse -- many ended up BEING ALIVE & surviving simply from quitting Drugs &c.! -- there's a chance that guys like Eric C. and many others wouldn't be around, would have OD'ed years ago & ended up in "Big Gig in the Sky" prematurely. so better / worse -- dunno -- but if 'alive & well' & still performing -- good in itself...
Eric Clapton,Stevie Ray Vaughn, just to name a few.Stevies actually excelled until his death. While doing drugs he was just a mediocre musician
My Chemical Romance. I think they got much better after Gerard got clean and sober.
The Beatles - By the time they put out Abbey Road they had gotten off the hard drugs and that is probably their best effort.

Aerosmith - once they got off drugs their music definately improved.
I think Linkin Park is a very good example. Theyve never been drunk or anything like that in the past and I dont see them being in the future.
No--it's the taboo subject in our War on Drugs culture, that creative people often like to use drugs and that it frequently makes them more creative, though it's also sometimes destructive (witness all of the overdoses and such amongst those talented artists).
Yes, I believe My Chemical Romance improved greatly after Gerard Way got sober. True they still have a long way to go musically but they did improve.
