I want to Write Music, how do musicians do it?!

Question: i dont mean problems lyrically or writing a pop hit. Just what is the theory behind it. Do you just pick out a few chords and play notes within them and set a rhythm at the same time for the drums. What is the real theory behind it because i want to learn as a song writer. Also if there may be a book for what i am lookng for exactly. that would be cool. thank you

Well I write songs, and this is going to take a shitting long time to write out so here I go.

Basic music theory tells us that whatever key your in you can stick to any of the 7 chords of that key, for example

C major contains the notes

C D E F G A B

and the basic major/minor chords of them notes are

CEG (I)
DFA (II)
EGB (III)
FAC (IV)
GBD (V)
ACE (VI)
BDF (VII)

in guitar those chords are C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, B diminished.

So from them chords you make a basic progression

I, IV, V, I, IV, V (C major, F major, G major)

now over them chords you can write a melody using any of the notes within the C major scale (CDEFGAB)

Hope that helps :-)
its a talent. if ur good at it then u can grasp it quickly!
maybe u can learn from the internet like the basics? and the rest depend on u.
my sister writes lyrics and all she does is pik a hobbie of hers or jus summfin she likes such as (i dunno anyfin really)

then u jus rite a load of words (they dnt hav 2 ryme)

then jus make a tune 2 go wiv it

then jus go 2 a recordin studio and record

then jus show off ur new talent 2 all ya frends

of course u hav 2 hav a good voice or u can rite em nd sum 1 else sings

hope that helpd
You need to figure out the key, time signature and tempo first... but you can always go back and change them later...
You use the key to write your chord progression, which (presuming you're using a finished cadence as most beginning song writers do) starts at chord I and finishes with either chord IV then chord I or with chord V then chord I.
In the key of C Major:
C = I (M)
D = II (m)
E = III (m)
F = IV (M)
G = V (M)
A = VI (m)
B = VII (d)
C = I (M)
Whatever the key, chord I will have the base note of the key that you are in.
Eg. In the key of C major; chord I is C, which is made up of CEG
I could go on all day explaining the complexities of chords and keys and everything but I'm pretty sure you don't really want to know about that...
The time signature is the numbers written at the start of the piece just after the clef and the key markings. If it is marked with a C it means common time (4/4). 4/4 is simple quadruple time and is used most often. But you can also have something like 9/16 or 12/8.
Once you have a chord progression (or the start of one) and your time signature you can write a basic melody line over the top. It doesn't have to have words, it could be written for a flute or saxaphone etc..
Once you have a melody you can play around with counter melodies, drum rhythms, FX, different instruments, harmonies... whatever you want....
That's basically it...

An easier way: Write some lyrics that have a melody with them, pluck out a few chords that sound good with them on a piano or guitar and have someone bash at the drums while you sing....

If you really want to get into song writing Syballius is the way to go.... but i think it costs around $3,000.... Most music stores should sell books on writing music....
Well i'm no professional but i have written a good number of songs in my past even though in 15. first of all you need to think hard on what you want to write about and then you need to wrie key words or phrases what you want in your song then you need to write the song with a tune.
for instace i have just wrote a song about my best frien who died 6 months ago and how she was only 14 at the time and i said how i cant wait to see her agen. dont be afraid to let your feelings out Good Luck ! ..x
