Good heavens, I've always wondered that.
I love metal, but when it comes to bands whose lead "singer" just growls in an incomprehensible way... i just... wow.

Apparently when it comes to Cd's, the listeners read along with the lyrics on the liner notes, and then begin to associate the growls with the actual words.

I just listen to death metal [and other such genres that just growl], for the guitars, bass and drums [It's great to headbang to].
But i personally couldn't list a band like that as one of my favourites, as lyrical content is important to me.
I can't admire your lyrical content if i don't have a clue what you're growling about can I? hehe.

Look at a lyrics page and listen closely. Although, death metal isn't much about lyrics.
