Count the dots....count the dots.....count the dots.... for positioning. They make a sticker you can put on your fretboard for all the notes....should be available at any music store.

You need body or muscle memory. If the fret board has NO markers, dots can be placed. But really, practicing a LOT is the only way to learn what you need to play. For written tests, if your lessons include that - air guitar :)

Go to Ultimateguitar.com, choose your instrument (guitar) and click on tuning. Find "scales" then choose any scale and choose "chromatic" and print it. It will give you a fretboard with every note labeled.

Please don't put the 'note stickers' on the neck. Every guitar player in the world learned without the stickers.
The Major scale is:
A-A#-B-C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G-G#.

Notice that there are no half-steps between B & E. (There are differing signature notations for the half-steps between B & E but that's for a later class.) Standard tuning from the top-string down, played as an 'open' note, each string at the 'nut' is tuned to:
E-A-D-G-B-E.

So if you place your finger on the first fret from the nut on the top-most string it should sound an "A" and you're playing an "A" note. Use the same method with each string; start with the open note then work your way up the neck until the scale starts repeating.

You might want to take a course in music theory for guitar or buy the book that shows the technique for determining each note name. Remember each string starts repeating itself. There is a finite amount of information to consume.
