How exactly does beef between artists help sell records?!

Question: This is a concept i've never really grasped. Often times people will say *insert rapper* has to create beefs with someone else to sell records...now I cant speak for everyone, but when i hear about two artists beefin that doesnt make me think "o shyt, this guys dissin somebody? let me go cop his album"....but thats just me

For example....before game got on he dissed Xzibit in a freestyle on LA...i cant remember...but anyways....Game was talkin s hit about how Xzibit got a bottle cracked over his dome and he almost died and how he was beefing with him he would kick his azz alota shyt (which isnt funny)...but later he got on the radio (after signing to Aftermath...gotta make sure money is right) and said it was all a stunt to get publicity...and it helped get him a buzz and get signed to Dre...

great example is the Cam and 50 example though.....this comes at a t ime when album sales are at an alltime low....SO they get all this hype but the only one smart enuff to capitalize was 50....he changed his album name and basically took the whole Curtis thing to another level....used the beef to his advantage....

TI did it to Flip to blow up as well...look at flip and look at TI now....

it just is a marketing tool to generate interest and get people to buy ur record in the hope ur dissing cats...

more shucking and jiving...
I think it just gets people talkin about em.
The publicity and attention.
Yeah, I agree.... they say that about every beef, but no, it's never made me buy a record.
Gives them more publicity which =
more people knowing about you and showing interest in you to buy your cd or mixtape. Many people love to see people beefing wheather or not it has a point. For example Rosie O donnell vs Donald Trump. Some of my friends and family members didn't even know anything about Rosie O donnell hosting a show called the view or even
if they did know about the view ,they never watched. But after they heard about them dissing each other they started tunning into the view to see what Rosie was going to say about Donald. Her show " the view" ratings went much higher during the little beef with Donald.

( I don't really pay attention to beefs that happend now n days cause there pretty much pointless)
I can see where you are coming from, but the general public thrive off confrontation, and general disdain between one another in order to sell c.d's.
Man this goes back to the infant days of hip hop when beef was a way to get your rep up. Of course, rap was a lot more regional in those days and word of mouth alone would do the trick. Most beef nowadays is real wwf and is usually deaded before it escalates. But on the off chance that two GOOD MC's beef and it really brews and bubbles (and is kept on wax) then us (as consumers) are graced with some real top of the line rhymes. As evidenced by Jay vs NaS. I think the game is definately due for another battle between megastars. It helps to keep stuff fresh.
