What is distortion? Do I need to buy a special amp for it?!

Question: I just bought a generic amp with 1/4" inputs. It has no effects on it. Will I still be able to make the cool power chord noises typical in rock music? Or will my music start sounding really clean?

I don't even know what distortion is. Is my music gonna sound like some old old school rock music with no power chords and people just picking at the strings?

(I just started)

The best way I've always been able to describe distortion to those who don't know is with the song 'smells like teen spirit' by nirvana. At the beginning it is just the regular guitar playing the riff and then a few seconds in to the song he hits the distortion pedal and the song explodes. Distortion is achieved either from a pedal or it's built-in in your amp. You can also get it from pushing your amp too hard, which is how it was discovered. Obviously the bigger and badder the amp the better sound you're going to get but once you get the tools you need you'll discover the sound you are looking for. Distortion can really bring out a solo if you like it that way or it can really fatten up your chords. It also covers up a lot of mistakes so if you are just starting out it is best to do alot of practicing without effects. Also, keep in mind that there are different kinds if distortion. The common three are overdrive, distortion, and fuzz. The distortion increases in that order. Anyway, I hope this helps.
Distortion is part of rock music. Power chords will only sound good with distortion. It distort the clean sound to create a cool rock sound. Its a must for all rockers. Some amps have built in distortion but it ain't power enough. You can get a good distortion from Boss DS-1 or DS-2. Try it!
Disortion can be attained in many different ways depending on the style of music played. For rock music, or grunge, disortion is achieved through the guitar itself. Check out these web sites, for detailed ways to modify you equipment.

Distortion gives that "rockstar" sound to your chords.

I'm not sure if you can still make the "cool power chord noises" but you can take your pick and run it up the lowest chord for a cool rock music effect =)
