DOOBIE BROTHERS - a doobie was 60's slang for a marijuana joint. Source(s):

They probably smoked alot of doobies Apparently a name that started as a joke.. supposedly it was better than Pud (sorry you will have to look that slang up) Tom Johnston attributed the band's eventual name to friend and housemate Keith "Dyno" Rosen, who considered it an improvement over Pud.
