Definition - a Supergroup is one that is made up of at least 2 famous musos from their own ex-groups thus - nullifying Cream cos nationally Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were not well known. Same goes for Led Zep - Plant and co were virtual nobodies until the Zep. It has nothing to do with virtuosity.

You can count Dirty Mac tho I never heard of them.
Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) slightly later.

Someone is thinking straight - Blind Faith, a genuine supergroup! If you refuse to count Cream

I'll go with Blind Faith
which consisted on Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Rick Grech & Ginger Baker

Clapton & Baker came from Cream
Winwood came from Traffic
Grech from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers
Blind Faith only made one album but it was quite memorable. Had such tracks as Can't Find My Way Home, Presence Of The Lord. Can't forget the original controversial cover that had the topless teenager holding the model airplane. Powerstation Cream - well, they were; the first to be called a Supergroup. idk the first one but a good one now is Hellyeah. If you believe wikipedia...i would say The Dirty Mac although i have NEVER heard of them before...it was 1968...John Lennon, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Mitch Mitchell. By 1968 they were all famous for other projects so i would say they were a supergroup. Wikepedia has others listed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/supergroup...

Although i really wanted to say Cream :) When you think about it, probably The Beatles.

If you refuse to count them, then Led Zeppelin.
After all, Led Zeppelin never released any singles {none in the UK, a few early ones in the US}, and made their name on live performances and album sales. if by supergroup you mean a single group that has one of the best in each position, ite led zeppelin

jimmy page, john paul jones, john bonham, and rober plant are all in the top 5 of their respective duties

maybe though, the yardbirds when the had jeff beck, eric clapton, and jimmy page Sorry, but Cream was the first... the beatles Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young...or
Blind Faith...they had Eric Clapton (Cream) and Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group and Traffic)...not to mention, Ginger Baker (from Cream as well)....... The beatles, then the stones, then abba, then nirvana, then the spice girls yuck The Beatles, end of story. In the late 1960s, the term supergroup was coined to describe music groups composed of members who had already achieved fame or respect in other groups or as individual artists. The term took its name from the 1968 album Super Session with Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Stephen Stills.

Q~ Blind Faith or Derek and the Dominos.
