Okay,I'd something sort of simalar to Tori Amos,Bjork,Thom Yorke,PJ Harvey,The Cranberries,Fiona Apple,,Death Cab For Cutie,Coldplay,The Yeah Yeah Yeahs,and Zero 7.

smashing pumpkins, deftones,Opeth..... Well im not sure how close this band is to the artists you described, but i like death cab and coldplay a lot, as some of my friends do too, and we all love this band called zox.
The reason i suggest rock is because the are pretty unique because they use an electric violin in their music. They are very easy to listen to also. radiohead
muse Concrete Blonde.... They are sorta between Joan Jett, The Cranberries, they are just awesome. Check them out. You may like 3 Days Grace or System Of A Down Cocteau Twins

Bright Eyes Bright eyes... they are amazing. Not insanely well known, but not exactly in the shadows. They are really fantastic, and they actually sound like they have not been processed so much to the point of freaking poppy perfection. I like it a lot, they really are fantastic : ) Coldplay is worthless. But you should check out Something Corporate, Oleander, Jack's Mannequin, Snow Patrol, and Mat Kearney.
