Is it possible to sing with a six pack? (of abs)?


I'm a pretty healthy guy, but while I don't go to the gym anymore, my abs are still very tight. But I've really been exploring singing in the past few months, in addition to playing piano and guitar, and seem to have trouble breathing. Is this because of my abs? I know how to breathe correctly, but my stomach just doesn't expand like other people's do. I can feel my diaphragm "hitting a wall" and not expanding any further. Is it possible to overcome this? I don't have to do much to keep my six pack, and I'd like to hang on to it as long as possible. Any ideas?


Answers: i'm a singer and i've had this problem too (not because of a six pack though! lucky you!!)

more than expanding your stomach, you need to focus on expanding your rib cage. try a couple different exersizes (sp?):

1st- lay down on the floor and deep breathe for a minute. focus on where you feel your muscles expanding and contracting. you should feel some pressure at your lower back (because when you breathe you expand everywhere) and you should feel both your stomach and your ribs go outward. then practice taking in deep breaths and hissing out for counts of 4, 6, 8, so on. as long as you can.

2nd- "sitting" against a wall try the same things.

3rd- standing straight again, roll your shoulders back and kinda try to "puff out" your chest. (as a girl i try to think of it as making a "shelf"- you know what i mean) and breathe in deeply. when you sing, make sure you concentrate on keeping your ribs expanded even while you are letting air out. the muscles that should be working now are the lower abdominals (under the stomach) you'll feel them pushing upward.

these three excersizes help me focus my breath when i'm falling off the wagon. hope this helps. Source(s):
