I read it's legal to share up to 5 copies of a file/song w/ friends. Is this!

Question:

I read it's legal to share up to 5 copies of a file/song w/ friends. Is this true?

If it is true, where can I find a definitive answer?

Answers: Definitive answer: NO for "a song, in general". Anything copyrighted and mainstream. NO, it's not true.

Now there are services, such as MyTracks - which is a social networking/music sharing site - it encourages the sharing of files it provides - the bands are independent and featured on the site, it's promotional.

Any independent free-use song can be shared if that's the intent of the original offering (mp3.com free downloads, for example). A song you write, produce and distribute - share with as many people as you like. Source(s):
The U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act is much more strict and deems copying of copyrighted music (with the exception of making a copy for your own use) as illegal. The U.S. Code protects copyright owners from the unauthorized reproduction, adaptation or distribution of sound recordings, as well as certain digital performances to the public. In more general terms, it is considered legal for you to purchase a music CD and record (rip) it to MP3 files for your own use. Uploading these files via peer-to-peer networks would constitute a breach of the law. NNNNNNOOOOOOO

that's such a lie!! Not true! Any copyrighted material is illegal to copy by any means including electronically. The rule is that you are allowed to make a certain number of copies of a song/cd for your personal use (like if you want to put digital files on your work computer, NOT to share with friends). Many cd's now have copy protection in them to help ensure you are only making so many copies.
