Do you think that rock music is shifting towards higher pitched singers?!

Question:

Do you think that rock music is shifting towards higher pitched singers?

I can think of plenty of examples to support both sides of this. But it seems like alt rock is starting to have higher pitched singers (The Format, Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, etc). More specifically, its kind of a whiny (im not saying whiny in a negative way), higher pitched voice that seems to have become popular among this sort of band. What do you think?

Answers: Now THIS is an interesting question.

It does seem like we're moving away from the Vedder-esque baritones that were everywhere for a while. It still seems like there is quite a few of them out there, though.

I think it's cyclical, like the popularity of female vocalists. Right now that seems to be on the up-swing too. Well, yes and no.

For some genres, emo in particular, vox are shifting into higher pitched singing and clearer enunciation.

Other genres though, such as Death Metal, have moved to lower pitches and screaming. yeah i have noticed, i like high pitch singers best personally, but i like lower pitch too. I dont really think it a higher pitch but more versital sound, I mean for a singer to go and hit the high notes on parts of the song and then go back down to normal tone Just because you don't hear Bob Dylan and Lemmy Kilmister on modern radio anymore that doesn't mean Rock is shifting towards higher-pitched vocalists.

Personally I'm a pretty low-pitched Rock singer myself and I've seen plenty of lower pitched singers not only in underground Rock but also some in mainstream Rock. But I do have to agree with you somewhat in that the singers who do have higher pitched voices do sound like they're getting higher but I don't think that they're really the focus of Rock, it could also be that since so many young people are into Rock (bleh!) they like the higher, more childish voices over the older-sounding ones.
