Guitar Players: How long did it take for you to develop calluses?!

Question:

Guitar Players: How long did it take for you to develop calluses?

I'm a beginner who just started learning and I hear it's a bit easier to hold the strings down after you've developed calluses on your fingers.
I feel like I cant REALLY start learning until I get them because it hurts so much....so I'm just kind of playing around for an hour a day, pressing the strings so that they will develop. How long did it take for your calluses to come when you were first learning?

Answers: I would say that it takes about two or three weeks, however it really depends on what you're doing...if you're just playing for about an hour a day it's going to take longer. Your calluses will develop quicker if you play for an hour, and then wait awhile and then start playing again, so the skin on your fingertips doesn't get a chance to heal itself. Also, what you heard about developing calluses making it easier to play is most definitely true. Guitar is tough to learn when it hurts to play, and this is why most people get frustrated and quit before they give it a chance. The same goes for your fingers at the joints and your wrist. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to get your wrist out and your fingers up without them hurting. Keep practicing as much as you can each day and the calluses will come quickly. Good luck. My own experience. It took me a couple weeks. Just play through the pain. It will never hurt again.
