Question:

What is means by INTERVALS in music? How is it relevant to playing guitar.?

Please give a detailed explaination and if possible please give resources where its practical examples could be found (in audio format).

Answers: An interval is a space range within an octave. For instance, if you play an open D sting, then play the D string at the first frett, that is a minor second interval. play it at the second frett, and that is a major second inerval. Intervals are what scales and chords are made of. They are useful in creating harmonies, such as playing in thirds. This means that if the melody note is a D (your open D string), and if the chord is a D major, you can compliment the singer/instrumentalist by playing a F# note (d string, fourth frett). The F# is the major third to the D note. This range in frequency is called an interval. The most common intervals used in a major key are listed below. Since I have been using the D string (4th string) on the guitar, I will formulate this to the D major scale.

D=Root........4th string open
E=major second...................4th string 2nd frett
F#=major third...........4th string 4th frett
G= perfect fourth..........3rd sting open
A=perfect fifth...............3rd string 2nd frett
B=major sixth..........2nd string open
C#=major seventh.............2nd string 2 nd frett
D= octave........................... string 3rd frett

After this it just repeats it's self. I have seen whole books on music theory that don't go this deep (granted there were very easy books), but still, this is something that is much better shown, than told (or written in this case). I really don't know of any audio examples of this, other than what I do myself when I am teaching music, but it is used in any kind of music or any song you may listen to, provided of course that it has a melody. That would dismiss rap as there is no melody, and without a melody there is nothing on which to base a harmony, for which intervals are used. Anyway, I hope I have provided you with some useful information. an interval is just the distance between two notes...it measures how close to eachother or how far they are from eachother within the 12 tones of the chromatic scale

Ascending in chromatic half steps from the Root:

Root (R or 1)
minor second (b2)
major second (2)
minor third (b3)
major third (3)
perfect fourth (4)
augmented fourth or diminished fifth (#4 or b5)
perfect fifth (5)
augmented fifth or minor sixth (#5 or b6)
major sixth (6)
minor seventh (b7)
major seventh (7)
