Answers: You can basically link hip hop with almost every genre, but I have to say Reggae. A lot of the DJ's and Artist that came out of Hip Hop were Jamaican or had parents that were Jamaican. Plus Reggae came from the "streets," people talked about what they knew or been through. Listen to some really old school reggae and you'll understand. From the song content, to the parties, to the DJ's and to the crews. I'm not saying that it's the only genre that hip hop originated from, like fredMS said, Funk helped too. The roots of hip hop are found in West African and African-American music. 70s Soul and Funk funk records from the 70's and early 80's. They used to loop the breakbeats and then put in sounds from other records. They looped it so that ppl wouldnt have to stop dancing. The mc'ing comes from the dub genre, i think. They used to talk over the records to keep the party live.
