I have am a background singer, and have been asked to start leading worship at C!

Question:

I have am a background singer, and have been asked to start leading worship at Church. How do I lead a song?

How do I know what key to sing in? What are some of the basic rules to leading a song?

Answers: The keys of D, G, and C are considered the "People's Key"... in other words, most people can sing songs written in those keys. If you don't have a way to determine those keys, then your best bet is to find a strong mezzo soprano to start you out. She is most likely to start the song high enough that the women can sing with it, and in a good octave for the guys to join in as well.

Do not let a tenor start you out... not that I have anything against tenors... but they tend to sing in odd keys, which force the women to either sing way to high, or way too low.

Basic rules:

If your audience knows the song, then your main purpose will be to control tempo, entrances, and cutoffs. You don't have to be an expert at conducting, but you might want to observe some good conductors to see how they indicate tempo. Don't start things too fast, but most praise music isn't meant to be a dirge, either.

If your audience doesn't know the song, then you'll need to teach them. The best method is to sing a line, have them sing it back to you, and do that line by line until you get to the end of the song. After that, you're just back to conducting.

If you're in charge of picking the music, remember, simple is good. Complex melodies aren't much fun for inexperienced singers. They just get frustrated and don't sing.

Don't forget to have fun. It's an opportunity for everyone to worship together, and worship should be full of joy! Church audiences, in my experience, are the least critical of any audience. They want you to succeed, and that energy can carry you along.

Good luck! Source(s):
I'm a professional singer with a group called Shillelagh Law (www.shillelaghlaw.com). I taught music at church Bible school for several years. I've been performing in public since the age of 2.
