*****and also, when someone says "fourth string" is it the fourth from the top or the fourth from the bottom?*****

Answers: The F chord chart you have provided would be considered a barred chord. It's just the E chord "shape" moved down the neck a half step, using your index finger to barre across the first fret.

Barre chords are not the easiest thing to learn to play, and especially not easy for small hands. Most the time people play the F chord just as a 4 string chord ignoring the two lowest strings and just using your index finger to barre only 2 strings.

Here is a link for a Baritone Ukulele Chord Chart. A baritone ukulele is like a guitar that only has 4 strings, tuned the same way just missing the 2 lowest strings. You can play baritone uke chords on the guitar, you will notice many similarities to guitar chords and also 'see' how different chords are related more easily. It's also much easier to understand the barre chord concept when you limit it to the bottom 4 strings.

If you think that's pretty cool, maybe you should try the baritone ukulele sometime. They're pretty fun and very forgiving, easier to play than the guitar, about 1/2 the size and strings that are very easy on your fingers, and have better sound than most "backpacker" guitars.

Oh, and stings are numbered from the bottom to the top, there is a lot of confusion about this perpetuated by the net-idiot newbies. The first string on the bottom, the high E, the sixth string is the low E.

The 4th string (from the bottom of course) would be the D.... and that's the lowest string on a baritone uke! :D Source(s):
I play guitar and have fun with ukuleles!.. and other instruments too!
