I've also read about Hendrix opening for The Monkees The Dead Milkmen opened for Britney Spears.

If you dont know who the Dead Milkmen are look it up!!! I saw Sevendust open up for Creed. Talk about a mix of crowds. A few bizarre ones:
Alice In Chains opening for Kiss
House of Lords (melodic rock act) opening for .38 Special

NP: "Johnny Don't Wanna Ride" - Tokyo Dragons YES, but I still had fun at the shows. I saw KISS, before they were famous or had any hits open for Billy Joel. It was funny because no one new who kiss was at the time. At another show Dr. Hook and the Medicine show opened for KISS. I thought it was pretty weird to see Boston & Black Sabbath together. I went to a festival-type show in Canada which had NIN and Soundgarden headlining. Most of the bands were on the NIN side of the spectrum - Marilyn Manson, Pop Will Eat Itself, etc. The big surprise for me was seeing Reverend Horton Heat on the bill - the band's punk/rockabilly style was very different from everyone else there.

They put on the best show there, though.

Edit: lovnrckets - they rocked. Not only was I impressed by the music, but by the energy in the crowd that the band created. Probably Motley Crue and Whitesnake. White snake to me were a Led Zep type band and just didn't seem to be in the same category musically, age and look with Motley. They bored me!
Motley Crue rules! From First to Last opened for Fall Out Boy....and also played with all american rejects...that was wierd for me. More NIN talk coming! During the "With Teeth" tour, Trent had The Dresden Dolls opening for them. Not a bad band but a far cry from the headliner, musically. DDs are more like a gentle goth-cabaret, although their lyrics range from bleak to black humor. They have a lot of fans so I will choose my words carefully. They weren't the right group to get you psyched for NIN.

I would have gladly traded the DDs straight up for the good Reverend. They would have been much more energetic. I saw Wu Tang Clan open up for Rage Against the Machine
