Should I start to learn notes for my guitar?!

Question:

Should I start to learn notes for my guitar?

Ok, I'm a guitarist and I'm a in a band. I'm preaty good. However I only know a hand full of notes. I was self taught, and then I started using tablature. So should I start to learn more notes or does is matter?

Answers:

I don't think it's necessary to be able to read music, but knowing the notes is a good idea.

You didn't really give much detail on how much you knew on the guitar yet. But, I'm assuming since you don't know the notes, that you probably don't know your scales yet.

I'll put it as simple as I can. Music Theory is something that all musicians need. It is the one language that we can communicate with other musicians with. So if I just randomly met you one day, I could tell you, lets jam, I'm rocking a vi, IV, I, V progression usually in the Key of G and you would know exactly what I meant. Obviously, you'd have to listen to my rhythm before you could just jump in, but if you already know what Key I am playing in, then you will know what notes you can accompany with.

If you learn the notes of music, then you can learn scales. Once you learn scales, you can solo. After that you can learn chord chemistry and how to build chords. Then you can truly start composing music without even having to pick up your guitar.

I would say, since you are starting to create your own music, that it is essential to start learning the notes and Music Theory. It makes creating music much much easier.
