Cat Stevens?!

Question:

Cat Stevens?

"Father oh Father you give me just a little hope
i feel something out there reaching for me
well here i am won't you take me with you
out of this maze and away from this place

because it gets so cold and lonely here i'll do anything
to sit on a little rock with you
talk about the scheme of things
on a small rock with you"

-Father 'Back to Earth'

I was introduced to Cat Stevens by my older sister, back in '81 and have been a huge fan since. Last week, a local radio station did a 2 hour marathon on him, and they played 'Father'. Considering that he launched the album around the same time he converted, it always seemed to me to be Cat's cry for help/trying to understand our lives. So many reviewers talk of this song as him conversing with his real father, yet I have never agreed. Read the lyrics, understand his near death plight, his religious conversion and this cannot be anything more than a quest for spiritial help. The name alone..'Father'. Opinions please??

Answers:

I think it's a metaphorical conversation with God asking him for strength and to show him the right way

P.S. it's one of my all-time favorite songs
