What is the best way to go about writing a song on the guitar?

I want to write a song on the acoustic guitar, lyrics wont be a problem but i have no idea how to begin. Do i just start messing around with scales until something clicks or what? What are some easy steps to doing it?

Instead of playing around with scales, try playing around with chords. Here are a few to get you started:

G, C, D, Em
Am, E, G, C
A, D, E, F#m
Dm, G, A, C

Start with the first chord of the line (try them all to see which you like), then play the other chords in any order you want. All the chords from each line will work together. Then sing your lyrics over the chords you've chosen. Go back and forth changing the chord and melody until you find something you like.

If you try to compose the melody on the guitar, it will probably come out sounding very much like a scale and won't flow naturally when you sing. If you compose the melody with your voice, you'll know it will naturally be singable.

You basically have the right idea, just play around with *chords* until something clicks.
