One thing I do is to write down melodic fragments and/or chord progressions and start to play with and develop those. Another is to go back to previous works and sketches to see if there is a theme or idea that can be modified or that didn't get used in the final score. Make a habit of jotting down melodies, themes or progressions so you have something to spark the start of your next piece when you are finished with the current one.
