Why is it better to start off with an acoustic guitar over an electric?!

Question:

Why is it better to start off with an acoustic guitar over an electric?

I bought an electric before acoustic why was this the worse choice? What is better about an acoustic?

Answers:

There is no real difference in the learning process. Both are generally tuned the same and can be played in the exact same way.

The minor differences are; Acoustics generally require a little bit more hand strength and grip than electrics. Don't let some people fool you, though. You don't need a blacksmith's or lumberjack's hands to play an acoustic guitar. Any normal person can easily handle both types of guitars with some practice. Another minor difference is the range of the instrument. Electrics usually have more frets than standard acoustics, and many times have a cutaway so you can access that extra range. Acoustics can get a bit un-resonant, dull sounding in higher registers, and usually aren't played much above the 10th fret. Whereas, electrics are often played in higher registers, and amplified sound quality doesn't suffer too much in that regard.

The biggest difference is sound. An unamplified acoustic is a lot louder and more full sounding than an unamplified solidbody electric. You will most definitely need an amp of some kind to get the best sound out of an electric guitar. Generally, electric guitars are more versatile when amplified. They can provide great clean tones in addition to high volume, high gain sounds very easily, and reliably. Very high amplified volumes and high gain are harder to achieve well on an acoustic, due to feedback caused by the instrument's natural resonance.

In conclusion, I suggest you have both types of guitars. They both have their own quirks, advantages, and disadvantages. Being able to take advantage of both schools of guitar will make you a better, more well-rounded player in the end.
