The classical double bass is the same thing played in jazz. You don't have to learn how to play classically if you just want to play jazz. But it always helps. Versatile bass players are paid a lot. I learned jazz first, and then picked up the bow a couple of years later. It's really not much harder. Also, there are times in jazz when you're called on to bow a few notes, generally in ballads. So it's always nice to have that skill.
