Whatever works for you, I have long nails and they kept interfearing with my fret hand but came in handy on my pick hand (especially if I droped my pick) but I quit playing guitar and switched to bass so that way I didnt have to worry about my nails scratching on a string that I didnt want held down, but I know people who have really long nails and it doesnt bother their playing at all while others have to keep theirs down to the skin
