Answers:
No. The term wasn't meant as a musical style- it just meant people putting out their own records instead of signing to big record companies - thus a lot of later "indie" bands weren't indie at all. You could go back as far as the Deviants in the 1960s who put out their own records - they even sounded like a typical indie band.
