Can you play an oboe when the thumb rest is missing?!

Question:

Can you play an oboe when the thumb rest is missing?

Well, it sounds like a pretty stupid question, and you probably can play the oboe without the thumb rest there, but can you play it like, comfortably? I'm not an oboe player (I play trombone & violin), obviously. But my friend is thinking about starting on oboe, and she's looking at an oboe online, that's used, and in good condition, but the only thing is that the thumb rest is missing. And how much would it generally cost to put a thumb rest on an oboe?

Answers:

as an ex oboe player i would suggest she buy one with a thumb rest , because of the difficulty of learning. There are the holes on the keys that sometimes need to be covered and sometimes not.
Otherwise i would tell her to go to a instrument repair shop and have them replace it, but then again buying an oboe that is missing a piece may have something else wrong with it.
Buying an oboe is hard to do especially online. If the oboe is made of wood it may be cracked in places , and your friend would not be able to hit notes properly. When being shipped the temperature differences could crack it as well.
