I copyrighted 2 songs last year , want to add new authors. what to do?!

Question:

I copyrighted 2 songs last year , want to add new authors. what to do?

now I am in a band (we are 3) and they have contributed to the song, some new drum fills and bass line. I want to put the 2 songs to our names. the 3 of us instead of just me. how do I do this? Do I file a new copyright even though it is going to have the same progression, melody and lyrics? drums and bass line are new.

Answers:

First of all, that's really cool of you to want to acknowledge the contributions of your bandmates, but "drum fills" and "bass line" do not really mean they helped WRITE the song, just that they're helping flesh out the ARRANGEMENT. I would suggest forming a band publishing company, and splitting that three ways.

When money comes in from songwriting --- keep your fingers crossed --- it gets split in half. One half goes to the songwriter (you, in this case); the other half to the publishing company (you and your band). Lots of groups do that, or a variation thereof (different splits, etc).

That being said, if you still want to change the actual copyright, it's not an easy process. The copyright office takes these things very seriously. I think you have to apply for a certain form --- you can find it on their website (below).
