Do you need to buy replacement bottom drum heads when you buy replacement heads !

Question:

Do you need to buy replacement bottom drum heads when you buy replacement heads for the top of drums?

Is there a difference? Is the top more important? I'm going to buy replacement drum heads soon, and just replacing the tops sounds good, but will the sound quality be shafty, and can I tune the bottoms high so that there's no resonance? I'm buying really deep heads with a punch, so what's your thoughts? This is the first time I've had to replace drum heads, so I'm kind of a beginner at drum head replacement^^...

Answers:

That is what I did the first time I bought new heads, but if you don't buy new resonant heads you will be wasting your money. The bottom heads are just as important as the top heads (if not more important), so don't just buy cheap heads (Evans G1 heads are good for the bottom head).

On the snare drum you can tune the bottom head a different pitch than the top. I usually tune the top head really tight and the bottom head lower.

For the other drums, you really should not tune the bottom head a different pitch than the top. If you do that the toms will sound dead, you might as well play on cardboard boxes. If you want to get rid of the high pitched ringing that the heads make, you can buy tone control rings or dampening gels (moongels).

You could also take 4 inch pieces of duct tape and fold the center of the tape together. Then, take the unstuck ends of the tape and stick them to the drum head somewhere near the edge. You should have about a 1 inch flap sticking up and two 1 inch pieces stuck to the head. You can even put a few pieces on each head if you want to, just put them in a spot that won't get in the way of your sticks.

You should also replace the snares on your snare drum whenever you change the heads.
