What's more important? Melody or lyrics?!
Question:
What's more important? Melody or lyrics?
Me and a friend were discussing this the other day. He thought the lyrics were more important where as I think the melody is more important. Whilst I don't like bad or sloppy lyrics I think the melody is what really defines the song. I mean, you can't hum or whistle the lyrics but you can the melody!
What are your views/opinions boys and girls?
Answers:
It's all a matter of personal taste and preference.
Let us take classical music for example; there are no lyrics, the music evokes a mood or a feeling.
Take March Slav composed by Peter Tchaivkovsky,

when I listen to it I experience many feelings and moods. It evokes in me the feelings of sadness, despair and solitude and as the piece progresses I suddenly feel a sense of victory and a feeling of triumph. No words would bring this out as well as the music itsself does.
On the other hand there are songs where it's all about the lyrics with a melody to carry the message to the listener. An example would be The Beatles Eight Days a Week.... a man proclaiming his love... music alone wouldn't send the message to the listener.
