How come my singing voice is good in person, but when I record it on a tape deck/!

Question:

How come my singing voice is good in person, but when I record it on a tape deck/recorder it sounds REALLY bad?

I've recorded it on a tape deck, my computer, cell phone, everything. What could help this? It sounds really good in real life, even my friends say so... and people who hate me say so too :) But still... I need to know how to get my voice to sound better recorded. Any ideas? 10 points for the person who gives good steps and details :)

Answers:

It's not the recording's fault. When you sing, you actually hear a blend of your voice resonating in the air, and your voice resonating within the bone in your head. Therefore, singing in person will give you an inaccurate portrayal of how you sound to other people. Others probably say your voice sounds good to avoid hurting feelings, but if it sounds terrible when recorded, your voice may have some issues.

However, recording it to a tape deck or your cell phone isn't the best quality. A computer should render better quality than those, but you may need to find access to a recording studio to really get an idea of what your voice actually sounds like to other people. Just singing in your room isn't cutting it, because people can't hear what they themselves truly sound like to everyone else. Find a way to record yourself with high-quality, and then take steps to correct the way your voice sounds. All I can tell you without knowing details is practice, practice, practice.
