Suggestions for a Guitar Effects Pedal?

I have been playing guitar for a few years and want to start exploring different pedal effects. I want to get a pedal that I can use to play during a live show and has a range of effects to switch between. I play mostly rock/alternative, if that helps. Any suggestions? I am not looking for anything that is professional quality, but something that sounds good and will last.

I have been looking at the Digitech RP 80 and RP100A. Any comments about these pedals?

I have the digitech rp200. it's a multieffect pedal. It's awesome. I bought it for only 100 dollars or so.The bad thing is that since there are a ton of different effects, the amount of it is limited. But i think that's the best way to get started so you have a feel of what you can actually do with each effect.
