Does Britain have a more musically talented population, per capita, than the U.S!

Question:

Does Britain have a more musically talented population, per capita, than the U.S.? Why?

I think of all the influential (or minor) pop/rock acts over the past 40 years & it seems most are Brits: Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Beatles, Elton John, Byrds, Clapton, Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Morissey/The Smiths, New Order, Queen, Judas Priest, Culture Club, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, Peter Gabriel/Phil collins/Genesis, Sting/Police, Elvis Costello, The Who, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Blur, Oasis, Coldplay, Depech Mode, Erasure, Duran Duran, Radiohead....well, you get the idea.
What does the U.S. have as musical answer? Elvis, Nirvana, Prince...
But Great Britain's population is much smaller than tha of the U.S. -- what's in the water over there?
:]

Answers:

Maybe it's because, on the whole, Brits are more "open" with the arts (nudity & swearing on TV is OK, for instance), so artists feel more free to express themselves & that is manifested in great music.

idk
