Answers:

Sure. I will try to make it basic. I usually explain to pre-teens that diaphragmatic breathing consists of inflating the belly with air on inhale, and slowly learning how to retain the air on exhaling. Try this exercise.

Get in front of a mirror. Put your hands flat on your tummy with only the tips of your middle fingers touching. Now when you inhale, don't move your shoulders or neck. PRETEND like you are breathing from your tummy (your diaphragm is behind all of that stuff). Pretend like it is a balloon, and put all of your air in your tummy without moving your shoulders. Your middle fingers will slightly part if you are doing it correctly. Now exhale slowly. Don't blow it out. Make a snake sound of sssssssss to help you. The air will gradually take you back to the state of your middle fingers touching when you are ready to inhale again. It is going to feel funny, and it takes some getting used to. Eventually you begin to sing scales instead of the sssss sound once you get the hang of the exercise. But this is how we sing from the diaphragm. It is the diaphragm and other muscles that work along with it that makes it happen. Keep working on it and you can incorporate diaphragmatic breathing with singing. Good luck, and I hope you guys get to sing Nobody's Perfect by Hanna! That my child's favorite song!
