Which Era & Band Best Embodied The Rock 'N' Roll Spirit?!

Question:

Which Era & Band Best Embodied The Rock 'N' Roll Spirit?

I'm going to say the obvious that the original wave of rock and music that influenced rock had the most rockin' spirit. I mean come one, watch Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis dance, Little Richard scream and howl and move, listen to the riffs you've heard copied a billion times in their original context in Bo Diddly and Chuck Berry songs, and to top it all off, the old folks couldn't stand it! What could possibly be better?

The next best two eras have to be the garage rock/psychedelic era and the punk era. Both share most of the qualities of the original, The Sonics and the Wailers and the Count 5 and the Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones and the Standells etc. etc. could bring down a building with their unholy racket and man was it great. The same thing for punk, it was new, it was simple, it was youthful, it was rebellious and it made your mom want to take your turntable away forever. Just how rock was meant to be. I don't see those characteristics in bands like ELO and Genesis.

So, who fits this mold best in my view? Probably the Sonics.

"We were a wild, dirty, kickass band." "We were nasty. Everything you've heard people say about us is true."

And to top it off they could load a simple set of chords with more distortion, fuzz and grit than you've ever heard at a nice mid/high tempo to make the archetypical rock song.

If I had to pick one person though, Iggy Pop really had THE rocker persona.

That's not the point, how does skill have anything to do with the sound you produce and the reaction that THAT produces? Isn't that what music is for? You don't need to be an expert to play good music, that bands you mentioned, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were perfect examples of this truth. Not only could Johnny not play the guitar "skillfully", he refused to. And he was doing anything but immitating jazz. Same with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols. The whole point is that it's fun and it gets a feeling across and to the people who like it (me) it sounds great. But I wouldn't be a real punk if I needed other to agree with me to be happy now would I? So to each his own, we'll just have to disagree.
