Question:

Answers:

All rappers are in the business of selling their image, and although they may have had some hard times and crimes its nothing compared to how much they dwell on it in their music.

Listen to Outkast's first album "Southerplayalisticadillacmuzi... compared to all their albums since then. Someone who was in power then (could've been themselves) clearly told them to make their music "harder" than the rest of their much better and much artsier work since then.

2Pac, one of the greatest rappers ever, went to the Baltimore School for the Arts and was never arrested until after he was famous. His own downfall came from hanging out with people he met relatively late in his short life.

After Biggie's death, his own mother confirmed that his home conditions weren't as bad as he talked about on his albums.

A lot of hiphop people downplay their rather ordinary if not privileged backgrounds because they don't think its cool enough or will have mass acceptance if they don't show themselves as poor as possible. This is a shame in my opinion. David Banner was an honor student in grad school before he got signed. Ice Cube was an architecture student at Arizona State (Compton, btw, was not nearly so bad in the 70s). The Ying Yang Twins grew up in the suburbs. Kanye West's mom was a university professor.

Certainly most of the rappers out there had hard times at some point, but one of the mass appeals of hip hop is how it enables fans to live vicariously through someone who appears to be harder/tougher/sexier than them. We audiences love it and thats why they sell it.
